Winter Roads and Your Paint: Detail, Ceramic or PPF
· AutoSpa Weymouth

Before the first storm, paint needs at least a clean, waxed finish. Paint protection film adds a physical layer against chips on the panels it covers. A ceramic coating makes the car easier to clean, but it does not stop stones or scratches. None of the three takes the place of regular washing.
What a South Shore winter does to paint
The damage comes from two directions. One is chemical. AAA Club Group puts it plainly: "The salt and chemicals used on winter roads can be harsh on your car's paint." Among the early warning signs they list are dull spots or a hazy film on the finish, particularly on the lower sections of the body panels.
The other is impact. Sand and small stones on winter roads get thrown back by the car ahead, and on the hood and front bumper that ends as chips. Salt works slowly. A stone takes a split second. Each one calls for a different answer.
The baseline we recommend before the first storm
Our owner, Paul Keough, recommends at least an exterior detail as fall turns to winter, so the paint goes into the harsh weather with a coat of wax on it. In his words: "We really recommend a ceramic coating and some paint protection film, but at the very least an exterior detailing with a good coat of wax."
Why wax? AAA explains that "Wax creates a barrier on painted surfaces, making it harder for salty slush to stick." Our Silver Exterior Package lists "Hand wash, clay bar, machine polish to restore gloss and reduce swirls, and paste wax." If a weekday drop-off is hard to fit in: "After-hours drop-off is available by prior arrangement using our secure key drop box."
Where paint protection film fits
When customers ask us the difference, Paul's answer is short. Film is what protects against chips and surface scratches. A coating isn't.
Paint protection film is a physical urethane film, applied to the areas that take the most impacts. Our Partial Front package covers the full hood, front fenders, side mirrors and front bumper, and the page describes it as "Ideal for daily drivers seeking essential coverage against road debris and rock chips." Film protects only the panels it covers, so any panel left uncovered is as exposed as before. Before installation, we go over the car and the coverage with you.
What a ceramic coating does in winter, and what it doesn't
Our ceramic coating page says it directly: "A ceramic coating is a thin layer and does not stop rock chips, deep scratches, or impact damage." We don't sell it as winter armor.
What it does, in Paul's words, is bring out the paint's finish and shine while making the vehicle easier to clean. In a season of slush, an easier wash counts for something. For the full side-by-side, read our PPF vs. ceramic coating guide.
Washing still does most of the work
No wax, film or coating keeps salt from landing on the car. It has to come off. AAA Club Group's guideline is this: "Washing a vehicle every two weeks during winter, and more often after heavy snowfall, is a good rule of thumb."
If your car has a ceramic coating or film, follow the care instructions we give you at pickup when you wash it.
Book before the first storm in Weymouth
If your car is heading into winter with bare paint, start with an exterior detail: book it online and bring it to 21 Union St in Columbian Square, South Weymouth. If chips on the front end are the bigger worry, paint protection film covers the panels that take the hits. A ceramic coating answers a different need: it won't stop chips, but it makes the winter wash easier.

Frequently asked questions
Does a ceramic coating protect paint from road salt?
We don't present it that way. A coating won't stop chips, deep scratches or impact damage, and it doesn't take salt off the car for you. What it does help with is cleanup: a coated surface is easier to wash, which matters when you are rinsing slush off week after week.
Is a coat of wax enough for winter?
It is the minimum we recommend. Wax makes it harder for salty slush to stick, but it won't stop a stone.
Which panels does PPF cover?
That depends on the package. Partial Front covers the full hood, front fenders, side mirrors and front bumper. Full Front covers the full hood, full fenders, front bumper, headlights, fog lights and side mirrors. We also offer Track Pack and Full Body. If you mostly see chips on the nose of the car after highway miles, tell us, so we can plan coverage around it.
Can I drop my car off after hours?
Yes, by prior arrangement, using our secure key drop box. Pickup is during business hours only.
