Clear Bra vs. Paint Protection Film: Is It the Same?
· AutoSpa Weymouth

Yes, they are the same product. Clear bra is another name for paint protection film, or PPF: a clear thermoplastic urethane film applied to a car's painted panels, where it takes the rock chips and road debris that would otherwise hit the paint. LLumar, the film we install in Weymouth, calls it paint protection film.
Why one product goes by two names
Both names point to the same film. Our own paint protection film page says it in one line: paint protection film is "also called PPF or clear bra." The gallery on that page even labels one photo "Clear bra on front bumper" and the next one "Full Front PPF."
Manufacturers use the longer name. LLumar's product pages and its paint protection film FAQ talk about "paint protection film" and "PPF" throughout.
The nickname does create one misunderstanding. "Bra" makes a lot of drivers picture a cover for the nose of the car and nothing else. Film coverage doesn't have to stop there, which is why our written quote lists every panel it covers.
What the film actually is
Strip away the names and you have a clear urethane film that is hard to see once it's on the paint. It sits between the road and your clear coat on the panels it covers.
LLumar explains that its film has a proprietary top coat that protects the urethane against surface scratches, and that most of those scratches self-heal when exposed to heat: the sun, warm water, or a panel warmed up with the motor running. LLumar describes its gloss and matte films the same way, as self-healing with sun or engine heat.
You also get a choice of look. Gloss keeps the factory appearance, and matte gives the paint a satin finish. We confirm which LLumar options are available for your car during the quote.
What film does not do matters just as much. It protects only the panels it covers, and it goes on over the paint you have today. We covered that in more detail, along with where a coating fits, in PPF vs. Ceramic Coating: What Each One Protects.
From "clear bra" to the panel list on your quote
When someone asks for a clear bra, the first thing we talk through is coverage. Our packages put it in plain terms.
- Partial Front: full hood, front fenders, side mirrors and front bumper.
- Full Front: full hood, full fenders, front bumper, headlights, fog lights and side mirrors.
- Track Pack: full front coverage plus rocker panels, A-pillars and rear wheel arch guards.
- Full Body: every painted panel, including doors, roof and trunk.
So a "clear bra" can be the front of a daily commuter that sees Route 3 every morning, or every painted panel on a car you plan to keep for a long time. The name stays the same. The coverage, and the quote, change. We would rather talk through where you actually see damage than sell coverage you don't need.
LLumar's FAQ makes the same point from the manufacturer's side: some owners protect all painted surfaces, others protect only the areas that take the most punishment, and those choices affect pricing. Living with film through a South Shore winter
LLumar says its film is sold and installed in frigid climates around the world, and that with proper care it can withstand winter cold. It also warns against removing film in extreme cold, because it can separate from the adhesive. LLumar recommends having it removed by a professional, indoors.
Proper care, in LLumar's words, can include frequent hand washing, prompt removal of staining hazards such as bird droppings, and non-abrasive waxes. LLumar asks owners to hold off on washing for the first few days after installation and discourages pressure washers and automatic washes, which can lift the film at its edges. That kind of lifting is not covered by LLumar's limited manufacturer warranty. We go over care guidance for your specific film before installation, including when you can wash it.
Before the film goes on
Two things from LLumar's FAQ are worth knowing before you book a consultation.
First, skip the fresh coat of wax. LLumar does not recommend applying wax or any other coating before installation, because waxes and coatings can interfere with how the film adheres to the paint.
Second, tell us about any repainted panels. LLumar designs its film for original painted surfaces, and its warranty does not cover issues with aftermarket or repaired paint. We check paint condition, chips and repairs before we plan the work, so that conversation happens up front instead of after the film is on.

Yes. Clear bra is another name for paint protection film, or PPF: a clear urethane film applied to painted panels to take rock chips and road debris. We install LLumar paint protection film at our shop in Weymouth.

No. The name suggests the front end, but coverage is up to you. Our packages run from Partial Front to Full Body, which covers every painted panel, including doors, roof and trunk.
Can I get a matte clear bra?
LLumar makes paint protection film in gloss and matte. Gloss keeps the factory look and matte gives a satin finish. We confirm which LLumar options are available for your car during the quote.
Should I wax my car before the film goes on?
No. LLumar does not recommend applying wax or any other coating before installation, because waxes and coatings can interfere with how the film adheres to the paint.
